2023 In Review

Kate Volzer
Interim Chief Executive Officer

As a Coalition board member and founder and CEO of an ed tech company, I was very familiar with the Coalition and its role in higher ed. But when I stepped in as interim CEO this summer, I gained a new perspective for how special this organization is and the breadth and depth of the work it does in support of college access.

You — our members, partners, and supporters — have truly and deeply inspired me with the hours and sacrifice you’ve committed beyond the scope of your jobs and by generously opening your checkbooks to make sure we have the additional funding we need to be successful.

Thank you.

2023 was a year of change — for our team, as well as for the field of college admissions nationally. Even in the midst of a leadership transition, the Coalition worked to bring our member colleges, as well as thousands of students and their supporters, the tools and education needed to navigate this changing admissions landscape.

With the Supreme Court’s decision to limit the consideration of race in admissions and the changes and delay to this year’s FAFSA, there have been no shortage of questions — from admissions professionals, high school and CBO counselors, and students and families — about the impact these big changes will have and how to navigate them. I’m proud of the ways our small team has brought together the expertise needed to help answer these questions for all of these audiences — at conferences, through webinars, in meetings and over social media.

What I’ve seen in my time leading the organization is the power the Coalition has to bring together so many stakeholders to learn from each other and work together to support students, especially those underrepresented in higher education. Through our partnership with Scoir, this year, we were able to bring community-based organizations into the same space where students, counselors, colleges and universities, and parents and guardians are collaborating on the college search and application process. It’s an ongoing part of our work to break down barriers to higher education and one that’s paving the way for even more partnerships and support in the coming year.

As the search for the Coalition’s next CEO continues and my service as interim CEO wraps up, I want to thank everyone who has joined our work this year and made it possible — and also thank Stacey Kostell for her excellent leadership over the past 3+ years. I'm very much looking forward to taking all that I've learned about the Coalition with me in my next professional steps, and continuing to grow the list of people and organizations working with us.

Please read on for a look back at what we accomplished together!

Our growing team

In fall of 2023, we launched a search for our new CEO, who will follow Stacey Kostell, now serving as vice president and dean of enrollment at member school Northwestern University.

Our next leader will join a growing team, with three new members hired in 2023.

Meet the newest members of Team Coalition:

Claudia Aviles
Program Manager

Claudia joined our team in September. Based in the Bronx, NY, she’s working on developing virtual as well as in-person programming for students & their supporters.

Jalil Davis
Technology & CRM Manager

Jalil joined our team in August. From his home outside of Philadelphia, PA, he leads our technology and data reporting work, including managing our instance of Slate.

Christine DeLong
Content Manager

Christine joined our team in June. Based in Denver, CO, Christine heads up content creation and social media strategy. Read on for some of her success in expanding our reach this year!

Apply Coalition with Scoir

In 2023, we entered year two in our partnership with Scoir, providing an application integrated within college search tools.

This student-centered experience makes it easier to accomplish more of the journey to college from a single account.

By the numbers

  • 141

    Coalition colleges & universities

are now accepting the application. Up 23% from year one.

  • 52%

of applicants are eligible for the Coalition's easy-to-use fee waiver

so far in the 2024-25 application cycle

  • 44%

    Of applicants are first-generation students

so far in the 2024-25 application cycle

New application fee waivers

This year, we’ve empowered our members to extend more fee waivers to students through our application, helping students search for and discover schools where it will be free for them to apply.

Our fee waiver process requires no additional documentation, a simpler process that puts students in control of claiming application fee waivers that they’re eligible to receive.

Beyond our core fee waivers, accepted by all member schools, additional fee waivers are available for students:

who are veterans or active members of the U.S. Armed Forces

who self-identify as the first in their family to attend college

whose family receives public assistance

enrolled in a federal, state, or local program that aids students from low-income families

who live in federally subsidized public housing, a foster home or are homeless

who are a ward of the state or an orphan

who receive need-based scholarships elsewhere

who are being assisted by any college or university access program

And we launched a pilot to provide community-based organizations with access to Scoir,

bringing these important college access champions into the same space where students are completing their college search and applying.

The intention in bringing all stakeholders into this process, into this platform – not just as observers, but as collaborators – is a new and welcome change for CBOs like The Opportunity Network working outside of the formal school system. Our students already have so many competing demands and deadlines, not to mention logins. With Scoir and the Coalition for College working to minimize the noise and centralize online support, students and CBOs can have more room to focus on breaking through higher education barriers and working towards a future where every student everywhere has the opportunity to build the life they deserve.
