How to Make the Most out of High School Inside the Classroom

By University at Buffalo

When you apply to college, part of the application review process is an assessment of your transcript. What are colleges and universities looking for in their transcript review? Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Maintain a strong grade-point average, or GPA, throughout high school. Upon initial review of your transcript colleges and universities will see your classes and grades from freshman, sophomore and junior year and the classes you are registered for in your senior year. Admissions committees understand that the start of high school may have been more challenging than expected and that’s ok. They will review your transcript to see if there is a solid GPA with consistency or an upward trend in grades and that you are maximizing your potential. Some schools may also ask for your 1st quarter or mid-year senior grades to ensure you are finishing strong.

  • It is important to continue to take a full course load in your senior year. Taking a full course your senior year best prepares you for a successful transition into college level courses.

  • If your school offers honors, AP or IB classes, or college level coursework challenge yourself in the subject areas you excel in.

  • If you are considering a specific major, be sure to look at the required or recommended high school courses to be considered for that program. This may vary by school you are considering so plan ahead and make sure to check with each school on your list. You’ve got this! Stay focused and remember, you can also contact the Office of Admissions of the schools on your list for advice and to answer any questions you have.
