2022 In Review

Stacey Kostell, Chief Executive Officer

It’s been a pivotal year for the Coalition for College, one marked by innovation and growth.

From launching a new application to completing a strategic planning process, the work we’ve undertaken has been foundational and transformative.

As always, our work is made possible through collaboration and partnerships, and we’re so grateful to all who made this pivotal year possible.

Please read on for a look back at some of the highlights from 2022 to see all the ways the Coalition for College helps more students see college in their future and provide them with the tools and information to achieve their goals.

Our new application

We began the year with a big announcement: a partnership with Scoir and Technolutions to build a new way to apply to college that streamlines the process for all.

Why the change?

By integrating our application within Scoir, we saw an opportunity to deliver great college search tools to more students and help students complete more of the college-planning process in one place. Our organizations share a commitment to serving under-resourced students, and simplifying the act of applying means creating a more equitable process. Our impact to date

After launching the application in August, we’ve helped thousands of students apply easily to Coalition schools, which share a commitment to graduating students on time and with low or no debt.

A Return to Connecting In Person

Our annual conference for Coalition members took place at Southern Methodist University August 11-12.

Two days of presentations and discussion on college access and equity in admissions culminated in a keynote talk featuring Art Coleman, managing partner and co-founder, of EducationCounsel LLC; Kedra Ishop, vice president for enrollment management at the University of Southern California; and Adam Sapp, assistant vice president & director of admissions at Pomona College, on maintaining a DEI commitment and preparing for the forthcoming SCOTUS decision on the consideration of race in college admissions.

And the Coalition presented this year
at national conferences including:

  • Slate Summit

  • College Board Forum

“When you look at barriers to entry and access considerations, a lot of times the question is: 'How can you move the process close enough to where it's happening?' That may mean, instead of students coming to you, you need to come to them. It may mean finding the systems they're operating within, and meeting them right there so that you're creating a simpler process, and one that's quite frankly, more enjoyable.“

Alexander Clark, founder and CEO of Technolutions, from the main stage at Slate Summit, on the benefits of our new application process.

Professional Development Opportunities for Members

In addition to our in-person conference, we continued to offer virtual sessions for members to learn and share best practices.

A few of these sessions included:

Supporting Undocumented Students

Non-profit, CBO and member voices share best practices in helping undocumented students learn about, prepare for, and apply to college.

The Complexity of College Pricing

A conversation with Phil Levine, founder and creator of MyinTuition, on how college pricing works, why its complexity matters, and how fixing it helps both students and universities.

Strategies for Accessible Campus Tours

Presented with our partners at Full Measure Education, offering data-based insight on how to create tours that meet students’ needs, including those historically underrepresented in higher education.

Understanding Curricula

Providing information and training on AP, IB, and Cambridge for admissions counselors.

And we welcomed the second cohort of Coalition Ambassadors
